More Information About Habitat for Humanity
God’s love in action!
Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.
- Local Success:
- Locally, we have built 101 homes since we were established in 1986.
- We have averaged 6-8 houses a year in recent years.
- Alachua Habitat tithes annually to Habitat for Humanity International. This money is used to build houses in the third world. Alachua Habitat for Humanity has built 61 houses through this program.
- Who qualifies?
- Must be an Alachua county resident for at least a year.
- Must be living in inadequate housing.
- Must have a steady income.
- Monthly bills must be paid timely and cannot exceed 40% of monthly income.
- Habitat is not a give away program.
- Residents must complete 400 hours of “sweat equity”. They work 200 hours on their neighbors home and 200 hours on their own home.
- Residents must pay monthly no-interest mortgage payments.
- These mortgage payments help us build new Habitat homes.
- Goals:
- We hope to complete phase one of our neighborhood, Celebration Oaks, by December 2009.
- We also want to always have one additional house in the process of being built in another part of Alachua County.
- We are currently raising funds for a house in High Springs.
- Results: Lives are changed.
- Children of homeowners are;
- 25% more likely to graduate from high school
- 116% more likely to graduate from college
- 59% more likely to own their own home within 10 years of moving from their parents’ household.
- All donations to Alachua Habitat for Humanity are 100% tax deductible.
